Supporting Literacy and Math (SLAM) is seeking two Assistant Teachers to join the
team of an innovative after-school program. SLAM provides foundational-skill
support in reading and math to at-risk kindergarten and first grade students
attending a Chicago Public School in Rogers Park. The program engages students by
offering a curriculum that celebrates active learning.Students are taught in groups
of eight. SLAM meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4-6 p.m. and runs from midOctober-mid-May.
The position pays $20 an hour.
Candidates must be flexible and willing to adapt to the needs of the students.
Applicants must be team players and welcome the opportunity to work in a
collaborative environment. Experience working with primary age children is
required. Assistant teachers will receive a monthly stipend.

teaching four sections of mathematics
each semester, leading an advisory, and chaperoning

Required Qualifications:
• M.A. or Ph.D. Mathematics, Mathematics Education, or a closely related
discipline
• Facility and comfort in teaching Algebra, Geometry, and Statistics
• Significant classroom teaching experience with high school students of
varying mathematical
ability
• Excellent communication skills, sound judgment, and emotional maturity
• A commitment to learn and grow professionally, e.g. an interest in
mathematics
pedagogy and refining ones craft of teaching

Minimum
Qualifications
Candidates
must hold a bachelor’s degree and be eligible to work in the United States.
Additionally,
candidates must meet ONE of the following requirements:
- Hold full teaching certification in
Tennessee or another U.S. state OR
- Hold an undergraduate GPA of 2.75+ and pass
the Tennessee Praxis II content exam requirements for the subject you wish to
teach OR
- Hold an undergraduate GPA of 2.75+ and a
bachelor’s or master’s degree in the subject you wish to teach (some
exceptions apply when following this option)
If
you qualify for option 2 or 3, you must be willing to enroll in education
coursework if offered a position. This is required in order to receive a
Practitioner teaching license in Tennessee. The coursework also offers support
and strategies you can apply to your teaching.
